Introduction to the Film Plates

There are three thousand individual film plates in this estimable collection of Great Lakes film photographs and supporting assets. The film plates are organized into three groups: Diapositive (Color Reversal) Films, Black and White, and Color Negative Films.

About the Diapositive Film Plates

There are three thousand individual film plates in The Great Lakes Film Collection; of these plates, two thousand five hundred pieces were made upon diapositive film. The diapositive film plates present a comprehensive artistic survey of historical Great Lakes Americana and the vast natural landscapes of the bi-national freshwater basin.

The plates you see below form a brief preview of the photographic works included in The Great Lakes Film Collection.

About the Black and White Negative Film Plates

There are one hundred and seventy-four black and white negative film plates in The Great Lakes Film Collection, a previously unreleased body of work, each one is the study of coastal interactions between wind, water, and land, the bearings of visual theater between each Great Lake and its surrounding landscape.

About the Color Negative Film Plates

There are three hundred and twenty-six color negative film plates within The Great Lakes Film Collection. This work, never released to the public, probes the tension between natural and manmade landscapes of the Great Lakes.

These particular photographs synthesize Rust Belt and Fresh Coast, revealing a harmony of surrender in the ordinary, while presenting the discord of progress in the complicated.

“Ed’s decision to shoot on film is not a matter of an unwillingness to evolve with technology. He views the permanence of film, the physical existence of the image, and its ability to endure as itself making a statement about the Great Lakes and the importance of taking a long-term view of their stewardship.”
